About my artwork.
My work explores aspects of the female psyche through presentation of multifaceted female characters, allowing the viewer to experience a woman’s feelings of worries and happiness. In my paintings and sculptures the audience is introduced to the female mind through narratives about women in cliché attitudes. These female characters interact with their own fabrication of the world, and with the events that transform them.
The melodramatic female subjects portrayed in my work are deceptively playful, and not always pleasing to the viewer. This is explored through the context of Magical Realism, with appropriation of complex symbolism from Mexican culture and Latin-American literature. My work is also heavily influenced by artists like Remedios Varo, Frida Khalo and Nahui Olin. The content is a criticism to social constructions and expected behaviors in women, and how they inform of the internal turmoil created by the conflict between social expectations, individual convictions, and actual effects in women’s lives. My artwork is introspective and highly psychological with images of women in situations that are subversive relative to the ongoing traditional standards about female roles in society.
Through my art work, I hope to help change the constructed parameters which define women in today’s society.
