About my artwork. My artwork references experiences lived through and the heritage I have acquired as a Mexican-born and raised woman who now lives in the U.S. Some works are a search for belonging after being uprooted, the turmoil of going through change as a single mother, overcoming obstacles, and growing stronger. Other works represent the transition of becoming this new and different person. While my work is autobiographical, the artworks leave room for others to reflect on their own search for the self.
I reference the female psyche through the body, the mind, and the idea of the dress. The dress is a representation of the body and a representation of the self. Both the body and the dress are a vessel into which life experiences and situations are poured. The vessel has to endure them all. The dress also represents a role that is imposed on women, but just like clothes, it is something that we can choose to wear or not. It is a choice! Now, I can choose differently, or I can choose to make my own "dress". |
The artwork is layered not just in material, but also in content, showing the viewer, both metaphorically and literally, that they are looking at a layered person.
